A plumbing preventive maintenance contract is most effective when it starts on day one, right after a water heater, boiler, or lift station is installed. Waiting until a system shows signs of trouble means the damage is often already done. Consistency from the start is what makes plumbing PMs actually work.
Why Plumbing PM Starts on Day One
Water heaters are a clear example of why this matters. From the moment a commercial water heater is put into service, calcium from the water supply begins to build up inside the tank. Without regular flushing from the very beginning, calcium accumulates, and over time, it can build up around small pinhole leaks that develop in the tank.
Here’s the problem: once enough calcium has built up around those leaks, the buildup itself is often what’s keeping the tank from leaking. If a tank that’s never been maintained is flushed for the first time after years of service, dislodging that calcium can reveal leaks that have been there all along, leaks the calcium had been masking. By that point, the damage to the tank has already happened. It just hadn’t shown itself yet.
This is why ACIS recommends starting a maintenance contract immediately after installation, for water heaters, boilers, and lift stations alike. Regular flushing and inspection from day one prevents this kind of buildup in the first place, rather than uncovering it after the damage is done.
